Minnesota Special Hockey is excited to announce the recipient of this year's annual Volunteer Scholarship as the school year comes to a close.
This year's applicants were all exceptional and have contributed so much to the program; it was a tough choice and one the Board takes very seriously. We thank all our volunteers for their work with our athletes.
This year, we are delighted to honor Andrew Martin, a three-year volunteer with Plymouth. Andrew says that when he suffered too many concussions to continue his own hockey career, volunteering with the Plymouth team was a natural fit. In particular, he has worked closely with one of our players, Hunter.
About Andrew's work with the Plymouth team, Hunter's dad said, "Andrew took to Hunter and Hunter to Andrew. Andrew worked with Hunter constantly and met Hunter where he was developmentally and encouraged him. It's my belief that Andrew had an essential role in fostering Hunter's love of hockey and his skill development."
In the last few years, Andrew has had a critical role in developing all players' skills in Plymouth. Andrew says that volunteering with Special Hockey is a "highlight of the week" for him during the season, and that he loves to see the "positivity and optimism the players bring every day."
Andrew will head to Washington University in St. Louis in the fall, where he will study biochemistry. Best of luck to you, Andrew, and thanks again to all of our wonderful volunteers!
