Looking for Volunteers and Contracted Program Director

By Susie MacMillan 01/31/2021, 8:45pm CST

We are looking for help, please share with family and friends.

Since our beginning in 2006, MN Special Hockey has continued to grow each year. As the only stand up ice hockey program for individuals with intellectual disabilities in Minnesota we had over 280 athletes participate last season (pre COVID), and this year we still have over 200 playing on 14 teams across the state. With such continued, significant growth, we are reaching out to ask for help.

We are seeking volunteers to help on and off the ice. On the ice, everything from assisting our athletes learn to skate to special event coordination. Off the ice, we need help with video creation, digital marketing and fundraising. If you are age 16 or older and are interested in volunteering please click here and complete the registration form.

We are also for the first time ever looking to hire our first Program Director. This position is contractual, with an anticipated 5-10 hours per week. Please see the attached job description. If interested please email your resume to Susie@MNSpecialHockey.org.

Season Restart - Updated COVID Guidelines

By Susie MacMillan 01/04/2021, 11:00am CST

We are restarting January 10. We have made modifications to our program to keep our athletes as safe as possible.

We are all very excited to get back on the ice!  The next 2 Sundays (the 10th and 17th) we will be able to practice again.  Please remember to complete the COVID Weekly Pre-Event Check-In on the Saturday before each practice to make your entry into the rink easier for all.

Remember to stay home if you have any symptoms!!!  We don't want to have to cancel any additional ice hours due to potential virus spread.

Updated COVID-19 Requirements

Detailed information on the updated COVID-19 Requirements can be found on our MSH COVID 19 PAGE. Please refer to this page for questions and more information.

Players, coaches and volunteers must wear masks at ALL times, both OFF and ON the ice.
  • Regular facemasks can be worn. They must cover the nose and mouth at all times.
  • We do not encourage this, but if a player has a medical reason to not wear a mask, they must have a note from a doctor explaining why this is the case.  Please contact Jane at jocashin@comcast.net if you have a note.
  • One mask is approved that attaches to the helmet facemask.  It is the CCM Game On Facemask.  They can be found at

  • Strauss Skates
  • PureHockey
  • Dick's

  • Everyone must wear a mask to enter.
  • Entrance is allowed 10 minutes before the ice time, do not attempt to enter early.
  • Each player is allowed to have ONE parent/guardian in attendance.
  • Players must come fully dressed, carrying their skates and helmets.
  • No bags of any kind are allowed.
  • Goalies should arrive at least halfway dressed.  They may bring a bag.
  • NO locker rooms should be used.
  • Everyone should maintain 6 feet distance while in the arena.
  • Exit the arena as soon as possible.

We expect that Minnesota Hockey will allow games to start after our 2 upcoming practice weekends.  MN Special Hockey is working on a schedule that creates a safe environment for our players and volunteers.

We will NOT have multiple team jamborees, teams will see a minimal number of other teams and we plan on extending the season with the last day of events on March 7th.

The team calendars will be updated when all this ice and schedule are finalized.  Please be patient as this is a lot of work!
